Memorial Garden

The Rural Community of Upper Miramichi is pleased to announce the first “Memorial Garden” for our area. Located on the sliver of land between the end of the Burnt Land Brook bridge and the road to the Seniors Complex in Boiestown, this beautification project is the brainchild of Dianne Clowater and some of her gardening pals.

The vision is a beautiful garden with trees, shrubs, flowers, benches, arbor and more to be created as a visual memorial to so many dear family and friends who have passed away. To get us started, our Upper Miramichi council has already committed funding for loam and excavation work but with much more work to be done, this may be a project that you can sink your shovel into!

Our team of volunteers will be looking for help with the labor involved in: digging, moving dirt, placing rocks, thinning trees, building benches, small bridge and arbor, gathering donated items and more.

If you aren’t able to contribute some of your time getting dirty, perhaps you would be willing to loan a wheelbarrow or co-ordinate/contribute to a lunch for the volunteers during the work parties. We could also use a few hours of volunteer backhoe time.

If you feel you don’t have anything to offer with the above-mentioned, and you still think this is a “fragrant” idea, we will be accepting donations towards the purchase of trees, gravel, lumber, hardware, etc. All donations will acknowledge a special person of your choice with an “In Memory of…” plaque or other permanent display. Please see the Sarah or Mary at the Upper Miramichi office or call 369-9810.

As this is intended as a memorial garden, we will be recycling some of the poles and lumber from the former Fair Grounds for garden fixtures. We are also looking for the following:
• Old pool liners or rubber pools (to be used as weed barriers)
• Large rocks (as big as basketballs or a bit more)
• Small beach rocks
• Perennials that you could spare
• Set of hardware and wheels from the hand pump rail scooter (to be incorporated into the sign)

Mrs. Frances Smith is ready to take information on any perennials you may have in the Fall or next Spring; call her at 369-2296.

This may sound like a daunting undertaking, but we believe it can be done. The next time you drive by this little spot of land in this scenic community, slow down and even pull over and let your imagination run a bit wild picturing what CAN BE if we all work together!

As you may have noticed on your way by the Memorial Garden a few new plants have been added. It is still very much a work in progress, but the "busy bees" have put a lot of very hard work into getting to this stage.

The new trees have arrived and will be planted very soon. Look for more changes each time you drive by or perhaps stop by for a closer look.
